FORT MYERS

Fort Myers - The City of Palms

Fort Myers got its start as one of the first forts built along the Caloosahatchee River in the early 1800's. A hurricane moved the fort to the current downtown location and there the city was incorporated in 1886. Growth radiated out in all directions from the old fort grounds during the 1920's. Prominent developments found there beginnings during that time. Although now modernized the Mediterranean Revival construction is found in many commercial buildings in the downtown area. Frame vernacular houses, Mediterranean Revival style homes, and several excellent Bungalow style architecture homes are found throughout the city. Home to Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, their winter homes are open for guided tours year round. This is one of several attractions that bring visitors to the Ft. Myers area. Steady growth, an outstanding climate, affordable housing, and low cost of living make Ft. Myers an attractive place to live.
